Bonfire night?  I hear all my overseas customers saying.  What the heck is that?  Well let me tell you all about it!

Bonfire night takes place on 5th November every year in the UK.  It is a celebration of a failed plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605.  Otherwise known as Guy Fawkes night or The Gunpowder Plot, it marks the plot by English Catholic’s to kill the Protestant King James I.  A man called Guy Fawkes, one of the plot-ees, was caught on 5th November 1605 with a huge amount of gunpowder placed beneath the House of Lords, in The Houses of Parliament.  Fawkes fate was sealed, he was tortured, forced to confess his crimes and then met a grisly end along with his co-conspirators.  For the next few days around the country bonfires were lit to celebrate the foiled plan and rejoice that the Protestant King was still alive.  Hence forth on 5th November every year since, the English people celebrated the failed plan by lighting Bonfires.  Somewhere along the times of history, effigy’s of Guy Fawkes were also bunt on the bonfires and fireworks were added.  I can only imagine the fireworks are meant to symbolise what would have been the Houses of Parliament being blown to smithereens.

Nowadays Bonfire Night is just an excuse for us Brits to gather around a bonfire on a chilly Autumnal evening, enjoy some fireworks and eat drink and be merry – and us Brits do so love a nice drink.  So if you are celebrating on the 5th November, here is an excellent warming drink that I can recommend.
